Illinois Soldier Survivors of Andersonville Prison
©2004 Kim Torp
Originally known as Camp Sumter and located near Americus, GA, Andersonville Prison has become one of the most
notorious of all of the Civil War prison camps. Operating for 14 months between 1864 and 1865, it was originally
set up to contain 10,000 men, but held close to 33,000 men at its busiest. 45,613 Union prisoners passed through
its gates, with Illinois soldiers comprising over 3500 of those. Almost 13,000 of the 45,000+ died, and approximately
900 of those were Illinois soldiers. Most of the deaths occurred during August to December, 1864, when prisoners
died at a rate of approximately 100 per day. This terrible loss of life happened for a number of reasons - partly
due to the Confederacy’s just not having the resources to feed, clothe and medicate so many thousands of individuals,
and partly due to the cessation by the North of the prisoner exchanges which had gone on up until that time, leaving
their prisoners to their fates.
The following is a list of the Illinois Soldiers who survived their captivity at Andersonville Prison, compiled
from various sources. The National Park Services' database provided the majority of the data, with other online
databases being used to fill in extra factual information for individual soldiers.
